Background:
Day 4 of Operation Desert Storm – Jan 20 1991
Yesterday the largest airstrike of the war took place when Package Q involving 78 aircraft took of to strike targets in Baghdad city from medium altitude. Until now only Stealth aircraft had entered the airspace over Baghdad.
The strike of 58 F-16´s meet a well defended city and the tactics was clearly not the best, two F16´s were shot down by SAM´s and non of the 4 main targets in the city were destroyed. The tactics were never used again based on the result from this strike. Baghdad clearly must be taken by surprise until the airdefenses is defeated.
The Iraqis got some confidence and our captured friends and downed F16´s has frequently been shown as troféers by Iraqi television.
The war will continue, the sun has raised for day 5 of the war against the Iraqis.
Situation:
A post strike to destroy Package Q target´s in Baghdad has been prepared during the night and will now be launched. The targets in Baghdad from yesterday remains and were never relieved.
Our CAP flights are now patrolling the border with normal routines, the night has been calm without any engagement. Besides Iraqi fighters on highest ground alert also fighters patrolling over Bagdad been presence since yesterday strike.
In parallell with the strike against Baghdad, preplanned strikes to soften up of the Iraqi ground forces will take place before our ground troops can cross the border into Iraq coming days .
Today will be the day the coalition forces will surprise back.
