Campaign: The Kandahar Chronicles
Setting: Pre-Dawn Decapitation Strike
Target: Fortified Compound Northwest of Kandahar
1. Situation & Background
Coalition signals intelligence has confirmed that regional Taliban commanders are convening for a high-level summit at a walled compound nestled in the mountain foothills northwest of Kandahar. The objective is to decapitate regional insurgent leadership in a single coordinated air strike before the meeting disperses into the complex cave networks at sunrise.
A prominent commander arrived via an aged, Soviet-era Mi-8 Hip, which is currently parked on an improvised landing pad just outside the compound perimeter. Coalition commanders consider destroying the Hip a secondary priority; the primary objective is eliminating the leadership building itself.
Critical Intelligence Note: The valley floor and surrounding dwellings are inhabited by non-combatants. Friendly units must exercise surgical target discrimination. Any strike resulting in more than three civilian casualties will constitute immediate mission failure.
2. Flight & Asset Roster
Flight Call | Aircraft | Ships | Role & Assignment |
|---|---|---|---|
BLACKJACK4 | OH-58D Kiowa Warrior | 2 | Armed Reconnaissance & Target Designation: Low-level scout, PID of high-value targets, laser designation, and suppression of MANPADS/roof positions. |
RAGE 9 | AH-64 Apache | 2 | Precision Strike & Fire Support: High-orbit AGM-114 Hellfire delivery on the summit building, gun runs on verified hostile fighting positions, and air-to-air engagement of hostile air assets if needed. |
TALIBAN DEFENDERS | Ground Forces / Combined Arms | Multiple | Compound Security: Man heavy machine guns (DShK), RPG ambushes along ridges, and shoulder-fired IR MANPADS (SA-7/SA-14). |
VIP HIP (Player/AI) | Mi-8MTV2 (Soviet Surplus) | 1 | Armed Insurgent Transport: Outfitted strictly with gun pods and unguided rockets. Tasked with hot extraction of surviving commanders or perimeter defensive air support. |
3. Operational Environment (MET / PIREP)
- Date: 14 June 2003
- Time on Target (TOT): 05:15 Local (First Light / Dawn Shadows)
- Visibility: 4,000m – 6,000m with cold morning mist settled into low ravines.
- Ceiling: Scattered layers at 2,200m AGL; surrounding ridgelines obscured by deep shadow.
- Winds: 04 m/s from 045° (Surface); light turbulence along steep terrain faces.
- Lighting: Extreme contrast between dimly lit valley floors and bright sunrise on the upper peaks. NVGs/FLIR mandatory for initial identification.
4. Execution & Flow of Battle
- Phase 1 – Covert Ingress & Positive Identification (PID):
- BLACKJACK 4 flights ingress low along terrain contours, utilizing Mast-Mounted Sights (MMS) from behind ridgelines to survey the compound.
- Confirm location of the leadership summit structure, identify perimeter guards, and map civilian presence in adjacent huts.
- Phase 2 – Precision Decapitation Strike:
- Once targets are cleared and laser codes are synchronized, RAGE 9 delivers precision-guided AGM-114 Hellfire missiles directly into the leadership meeting house.
- Gun runs are authorized strictly against positively identified hostile targets. Unguided area munitions are prohibited near civilian residences.
- Phase 3 – Exploitation, Mi-8 Threat & Egress:
- If the insurgent Mi-8 spins up or attempts an airborne counterattack, RAGE 9 and BLACKJACK 4 are cleared to splash it (Secondary Objective).
- Conduct Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) and egress south along approved low-level corridors before enemy reinforcements mobilize.
5. Rules of Engagement & Threat Assessment
- Collateral Damage Restriction: Zero tolerance for reckless weapons employment. More than 3 civilian casualties results in an immediate mission failure. Ensure line-of-sight and target clearance before firing 30mm or rockets.
- Threat Profile:
- Heavy machine guns (DShK) mounted on roofs and pickup trucks.
- Concealed MANPADS (SA-7/SA-14) teams on perimeter hills.
- Hostile Mi-8 equipped with machine-gun pods and light rocket salvos.
- Weapons Clearance: Hellfire precision strikes authorized on the marked leadership compound; 30mm/Hydra rockets authorized on verified insurgent firing positions only.
6. Mission Success & Failure Criteria
- Mission Success:
- Complete destruction of the Taliban leadership meeting structure.
- Neutralization of confirmed high-value commanders on site.
- Safe recovery of all Coalition air assets to Kandahar.
- Secondary / Bonus: Destruction of the Soviet-era Mi-8 transport helicopter.
- Mission Failure:
- Loss of any friendly helicopter (Zero-loss tolerance).
- More than three (3) civilian casualties.
- Failure to neutralize the summit building before leadership disperses.
