Background:
The war in Europe is coming to an end. East of Frankfurt at the USAF station Gelnhausen, the pilots are mainly providing ground support to push the Germans into a surrender.
Situation:
The enemy has destroyed most bridges in their retreat, and to ease our advance, the army is trying to save one of the last bridges. It’s located 26nm southeast of Gelnhausen. Even though the Luftwaffe is weak, they might still show up to ruin our plans. Defend the bridge.
Time and weather:
* End of march 1945
* Nice weather, light winds.
* Rwy 27 active.
Note: Gelnhausen is a temporary field; it’s short, and there are obstacles during climb out in both directions.
Restrictions:
– P-47D, max takeoff weight: 14,000 lbs (6350 kg) with 20° flap.
– P-51D, tested to a takeoff weight of 10,000 lbs (4500 kg) with margin, exceed at own risk.
– Spitfire Mk. IX, no restriction.
