Operation WatchTower CSAR

4 x UH-1H Huey, 2 x AJS37 Viggen, 3 x F-4 Phantom, 4 x OH-58 Kiowa

Objective:

The primary objective of Operation WatchTower CSAR is to conduct a search and rescue (SAR) mission using UH-1H Huey helicopters to locate and extract two downed pilots from Operation Watchtower. One pilot is located in friendly territory in the mountains near the frontline east of the enemy airfield Gelendzhik. The other pilot is behind enemy lines northeast of Krasnodar.

Crash Site Details:

  1. Pilot 1:
    • Location: Mountains in friendly territory, near the frontline east of Gelendzhik Airfield.
    • Terrain: Rugged, forested mountain terrain.
    • Threats: Minimal; potential presence of small enemy patrols or scouts.
  2. Pilot 2:
    • Location: Behind enemy lines, northeast of Krasnodar.
    • Terrain: Mixed terrain with urban and rural areas.
    • Threats: High; potential presence of enemy ground forces, Manpads, and air defenses.

Assets:

  1. Rescue Helicopters:
    • UH-1H Huey Helicopters:
      • Equipped with personnel recovery equipment and medical supplies.
      • Capable of rapid insertion and extraction of SAR teams.
  2. Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) Teams:
    • Highly trained personnel specializing in rescue operations in hostile environments.
    • Equipped with advanced communication and navigation tools.
  3. Escort Helicopters:
    • Provide air cover and suppress any enemy threats during the rescue operation.
    • Equipped with countermeasures and light armament for defense.
  4. Support Aircraft:
    • AWACS for real-time surveillance and command and control.
    • Reconnaissance aircraft for additional intelligence gathering.
  5. Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) Units:
    • Standby for immediate medical attention and evacuation if required.

Mission Phases:

  1. Pre-Mission Preparation:
    • Briefing of SAR teams and pilots on mission objectives, routes, and potential threats.
    • Verification and testing of rescue equipment and communication systems.
    • Coordination with AWACS for real-time intelligence sharing.
  2. Ingress to Pilot 1 (Friendly Territory):
    • UH-1H Huey helicopters will approach the crash site using low-altitude flight paths to minimize detection.
    • Maintain radio silence until in proximity to the crash site to reduce the chance of enemy interception.
    • Escort helicopters to provide air cover and ensure the area is secure.
  3. Search and Rescue for Pilot 1:
    • Deploy SAR teams to the exact location of Pilot 1, guided by AWACS and reconnaissance data.
    • Establish a secure perimeter around the crash site.
    • Provide immediate medical attention to the pilot if required.
    • Extract Pilot 1 using rescue helicopters.
  4. Ingress to Pilot 2 (Enemy Territory):
    • UH-1H Huey helicopters will approach the crash site using terrain masking and low-altitude flight paths to minimize detection.
    • Maintain readiness to deploy countermeasures if engaged by enemy air defenses.
  5. Search and Rescue for Pilot 2:
    • Deploy SAR teams to the exact location of Pilot 2, guided by AWACS and reconnaissance data.
    • Establish a secure perimeter around the crash site.
    • Provide immediate medical attention to the pilot if required.
    • Prepare for extraction while maintaining situational awareness and readiness to engage any threats.
  6. Extraction:
    • Extract the pilots and SAR teams using UH-1H Huey helicopters.
    • Escort helicopters will provide cover during the extraction.
    • Use countermeasures and electronic warfare to counter any enemy engagement during egress.
  7. Post-Mission:
    • Return to base with the rescued pilots.
    • Immediate debrief and medical evaluation for the rescued pilots and SAR teams.

Rules of Engagement (ROE):

  • Engage only hostile forces that pose an immediate threat to the SAR operation.
  • Minimize collateral damage and avoid civilian areas.
  • Prioritize the safety and quick extraction of the downed pilots.

Contingencies:

  • Enemy Ground Forces Encounter: Escort units to engage and neutralize threats, ensuring the safety of SAR teams.
  • Technical Failures: Backup SAR teams and equipment on standby for immediate deployment if required.
  • Weather: Monitor conditions closely. Abort or delay the mission if weather conditions exceed safe operational limits.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Successful location and extraction of the downed pilots.
  • Safe return of all SAR teams and pilots to base.
  • Minimal engagement with enemy forces and no collateral damage.

Command and Control:
