The 16th of July 1969, very early morning.
Yesterday a dozen flyers of the first Air Cav took part in a close-call extraction of a ranger platoon. Although the mission was deemed successful, all souls could not be brought to safety. A few men, approximately ten, were left behind on LZ Daze.
In addition, Yellow 2-3, the last Huey to enter the LZ Daze struck his tail with trees on short approach. What followed was a showcase of skill as the aircraft commander, callsign Lirc, managed to set his Huey down without causing any more harm. 20 seconds later the crew of 2-3 found themselves left behind and fighting side-by-side with the troops they were supposed to bring out.
This newly formed team made radio contact with higher command before sunset, all alive but clearly in a dire situation, and on the run. How they escaped the LZ is mostly unknown, but the gunships and their crews of Black flight did what they could to aid Yellow 2-3 and the grunts in evading capture during the initial combat at LZ Daze.
The CO at LZ Horseshoe, along with other staff are planning a day full of flight including a rescue mission to retrieve those left behind. Hopefully, the Air Force will join the struggle today.
