During the night, Russia launched an attack in northwestern Georgia. The attack began with pre-emptive strikes from artillery and naval gunfire on Georgian posts along the border as well as nearby airfields, Including Gudauta Air Base, where two observers from the USA have been reported among the dead.
The attack has been temporarily halted in the village of Byzb.
CTF.201 (MA) stationed in the area since last week has been ordered to begin Operation Rapid Response
Abkhazia, NW Georgia.
The Caucasus Mountains make the terrain very channelized where the only way forward for armour is along the coast.
The mountains also allow good opportunity for covert advance by helicopter in the valleys.
