Background:
After weeks of skirmishes between Syria, Lebanon and Lebanon’s allies (NATO and Israel), yesterday the situation suddenly escalated when Syria launched a limited ground offensive towards key locations in Lebanon. Air activity in Syria has also increased over the last 24 hours. SIGINT has also picked up A-50 transmissions coming from the Damascus area.
Situation:
Syria is not known to operate Russian built A-50 Mainstay (AWACS) aircraft, nevertheless, it undeniably seems like they have one now. It has probably been supplied in secrecy by Russia. This provides a significant threat as it might delay our efforts for air superiority in the area.
