Background:
Seven days have passed since the strike on Al-Qusayr. Yesterday, NATO air forces destroyed 8 of the 30 bridges that enable Syria to provide reinforcements into Lebanon.
Situation:
A couple of days ago NATO and allies implemented a no-fly zone over Lebanon and parts of Israel. This forbids all aircraft from entering the zone, except for military aircraft part of the coalition. The NATO / Israel efforts have shifted towards targeting Syrian infrastructure near the border, in order to limit the advances. Since only 8 out of the 30 target bridges were destroyed in last day’s air strikes, there is reason to believe some Syrian ground forces may have entered Lebanon during last night, but there is still no confirmation on this.
During yesterday’s operations, four non-hostile Russian aircraft were shot down by Israeli F-16s causing a political crisis, despite a swift apology. There’s no official conflict with Russia, but we need to realize that after this incident, there is reason to be cautious. Russia has declared a strict 40 nm radius zone around the Bassel Al-Assad. Any non-Russian aircraft within that limit will be engaged.
