Background:
1 May 1994
Almost 20 years have passed since Turkey invaded and occupied the northern part of the island of Cyprus. The tense peace the region has seen since has recently been tested by increasing amounts of cross-community violence and small-scale border disputes. The newly elected Turkish president is believed to have been funding and promoting this development covertly in a bid to strengthen his public support internally.
Russia, fresh out of their humiliating years following the fall of the Soviet Union, has been looking too reestablish their influence on the global stage and has used their position on the UN security council to voice support for the ethnic Turks of northern Cyprus, and have officially recognized the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a sovereign state.
Western analysts fear that the Turkish president, bolstered by the Kremlin’s support, may decide to escalate the small-scale disputes into a large-scale military conflict. No other regional power has made any statements for one part or the other, and it is believed that should fighting break out the western powers will find themselves with only the British airfield of Akrotiri, on Cyprus itself, as a base for their air assets. Accordingly, the United States has dispatched the USS Abraham Lincoln & the USS Tarawa to the eastern Mediterranean.
Situation:
There was an explosion at a police station in northern cyprus during the night between April 30th and May 1st. The bombing resulted in four injured police officers and has caused outrage in both Northern Cyprus and Turkey. The Turkish president puts the blame for the attack on a well-known milita on Southern Cyprus and has demanded that the leaders of that organisation, which Turkey has declared a terrorist organization, are to be extradited to Turkey for trial. The west claims that the attack was orchestrated by Turkish security services to manufacture a justification for increasing Turkish control of the island.
