Background:
Last few days have seen skirmishes around the borders of Syria/Lebanon/Israel/Jordan, with Syria inserting special forces and small armored units crossing the borders. We have been fairly successful neutralizing the intrusions, but the Syrians have been successful enough to make path for a larger scale attack.
Situation:
This morning, operators from LSOCOM (Lebanese Special Operations Command) and Israeli Maglan (Unit 212) reported Syrian armor leaving their bases in western Syria, moving towards the Lebanese border. The forces total around 15-20 T-72 tanks, 15-20 BMP-1 Infantry Fighting Vehicles, 4-6 ZSU-23-4 Shilka mobile AAA, 8-10 2S1 122mm artillery.
The forces are divided into three distinct groups, each moving towards three different key locations at the Lebanese border:
A) Syrian force moving from Damascus towards the small town Mazraat Deir al-Ashayer, where a small number of Lebanese resistance have setup minor defenses (infantry and M113s). Location known as “ROZ Blackjack”. JTAC Stalker1 is located on a hill W of the town.
B) Syrian force moving from Asal Alward towards Rayak town and airfield. This is a high value target for the enemy, and this force is reported to be slightly larger than the other two. The town has recently been targeted by Su-24 bombing runs, weakening the morale small Lebanese army detachment protecting the city with infantry and M113s. JTAC Stalker2 is located on a hill SE of the town.
C) Syrian force moving out of Homs, with unknown destination (direction indicated Rene Mouwad airfield, but could be something else). A small group of LSOCOM commandos working behind enemy lines have setup an ambush at the Syrian town Dhahabiyah. JTAC Stalker3 is located just NE of the town. The plan is to bait the Syrian force into coming to a halt, picking up the fight with the LSOCOM force, delaying their advance and make them vulnerable to close air support from NATO and Israel.
NATO and Israeli aircraft are being prepared to assist by providing close air support in the three areas.
