Operation Desert Shield is about to become Desert Storm. Allied commanders have set H-hour at 02.38 on January 17th. The opening blows will be dealt by AH-64 Apaches\, who will destroy two key early warning radars in western Iraq\, opening a corridor for the first wave of allied fighters and bombers. \n1.2 Area of operations \nWestern Iraq\, Jordan\, Southern Syria\, Israel \n1.3 Time and weather \n* January 17 – 1991\n* 01:00 local time\n* Broken / Overcast (8000′)\n* Wind from 207 / 6 kts\n* FORCE QNH 2977 / 1013 \n1.4 Air threats \nMiG-21\, MiG-25\, MiG-29\, Mirage F1 \nThe Iraqi Air Force has over 400 fighter jets in its inventory. At least 60 of those are stationed at the H2 and H3 airfields. \n1.5 Ground threats \nSA-2\, SA-6\, Roland\, MANPADS\, ZSU-23 \nH3 airfields (H3 Northwest\, H3 and H3 Southwest) are protected by a total of one SA-2\, two SA-6 and three Rolands as well as numerous AAA. \nEWR installations are protected by ZSU-23 and MANPADS. \n1.6 Friendly forces \nThe entire UN coalition is taking part in this campaign. The specific mission only involves American assets but the air corridor opened on H-Hour will be used by other coalition aircraft. \n1.7 Civilian/3rd part \nCivilian air traffic is grounded \n2 MISSION \nPackage NORMANDY will strike early warning radar installations CALIFORNIA and NEVADA near the Saudi border. Exploiting this gap in the Iraqi IADS\, package BRAVO will hit Runways\, SAM-sites and two C2 bunkers at H3 airfields (Strategic Operations Center at H3 Northwest and Intercept Operations Center at H3). Coalition fixed wing aircraft must NOT be detected crossing the border or the Iraqis may launch fighters. This will reqire a strict adherence to the Time On Target specified in your tasking. \n3 EXECUTION \n3.1 Commander’s intent \nPermanently disable Iraqi air defenses in the west (2nd Air Defense Sector). \n3.2 Packages \nThe mission contains two packages: \nNORMANDY – AH-64 Apaches and CH-47 Chinooks \nBRAVO – F/A-18 Hornets and F-16 Vipers \n3.3 Order of events \n\n\n\nPackage BRAVO departs Ramat David and CVN-72 and heads for tankers orbiting HOLD-points 100 nm west of target area.\nPackage NORMANDY departs FARP in northwestern Saudi Arabia. CH-47s will use their brand new GPS guidance system to provide an exact entry for the Apaches\, who will then take point at an IP 10 nm south of targets CALIFORNIA and NEVADA. Target layouts are unknown as they were recently moved. Previous targets have included one EWR\, 1-2 Generators and 3-4 C2 vehicles. In addition\, fuel and ammunition storage as well as crew accomodations. Defended by 3-4 ZSU-23 installations and possibly MANPADS.\nNORMANDY has TOT 02.38 local time\, at which point Operation Desert Storm will officially commence. At that exact time\, package BRAVO will pass their IPs en route to targets around the H3 airfields. Primary targets are Command & Control bunkers\, SAM-sites and runways. Aircraft on the ground are targets of opportunity.\nErroneus coordination (adherence to TOT and IPs) may result in Iraqi fighters being sortied. If overwhelmed\, the Strike Package will retreat and allow Air Force F-15s to clear the airspace.\n\n\n\n3.4 Rules of engagement \nROE: C\nAs per SPINS \n3.5 Acceptable level of risk \nALR: MEDIUM\nAs per SPINS \n3.6 Flight tasking \nPackage BRAVO (Lead: ARCTIC11) – Taskings are preliminary and may change depending on pilot availability\nARCTIC1\n* Depart Mother\n* Refuel at ARCO1 (A18) near HOLD (WP1)\n* HOLD at WP1 (A20-21) – FL Decides push time based on TOT at IP\n* Pass IP (WP2) at EXACTLY 02.38\n* When in range\, fire a minimum of one AGM-88C at each of the six SAM-sites (WP3-8)\n* Provide CAP as directed by STINGRAY\n* RTB on order from STINGRAY\, refuel as needed at ARCO1 or ARCO5 \nLoadout: FL decides (SEAD and A/A) \nWaypoints:\n1. The brave defending forces were forced to retreat\, and Finland has now completely fallen under Soviet control. Against an overwhelming Soviet force\, backed by advanced weaponry and relentless determination\, the front line has been pushed further west. \nDespite severe threats of nuclear retaliation if the U.S. and other NATO nations intervene\, NATO has decided to engage fully to halt the Soviet expansion. The unity and resolve of the alliance have only grown stronger\, and now a formidable force is gathering to turn the tide. \nSpain\, France\, and the United Kingdom have deployed their finest aircraft to the Nordic front—Mirage F1s and F-4E Phantoms are poised to meet the enemy in the skies. Additionally\, ground forces are being reinforced to stabilize the defensive line and halt Leonid Brezhnev’s advance across Finland. This is a decisive moment\, where the future of Europe hangs in the balance\, and the free nations stand united against a common foe. \nBut this is not the end; it is a new beginning. We have lost battles\, but not the war. Those who think we will surrender\, that we will fall silent before overwhelming power\, are mistaken. History has shown that free people never yield when darkness falls. We will fight back—in the air\, on the ground\, and at sea. We will strike with strength and determination\, and we will push back against this aggressive advance. \nWe have lost ground\, but we have not lost our will. We will stand firm\, side by side\, with our allies. We will fight for every meter\, every city\, every landmark that stands for our freedom. Let our enemies hear the roar of our aircraft\, let them feel the strength of our resistance\, and let them know that we will never\, never give up. \nIt is in our darkest hours that we show our courage. This is our moment. We will prevail! \n1.2 Area of operations\nThe terrain around Deanusaldi is rugged and challenging\, characterized by a mix of steep hills\, dense forests\, and winding rivers. The region features a network of deep valleys and rocky outcrops\, providing natural cover and obstacles. The area is heavily forested\, with thick coniferous woods that offer concealment for both friendly and enemy units. \nThe river that passes through the area carves its way through narrow gorges and opens into broader\, slower-moving sections. This river serves as a natural pathway\, bordered by high ridges and cliffs that can act as potential ambush points. The terrain is uneven\, making ground movement difficult\, but it also provides opportunities for low-level helicopter flights to evade radar and avoid enemy detection. \nWeather can be unpredictable\, with frequent fog and low clouds that add to the challenge of navigation. This environment is both a tactical advantage and a risk\, providing concealment for the rescue effort while also hiding potential threats. \n1.3 Time and weather\n* July 14 – 1982\n* 23:00 local time\n* SCT/BKN 13\n* Wind 325 / 03\n* FORCE QNH 29.13 \n1.4 Air threats\nThe presence of MiG-21s\, MiG-23s\, and MiG-29s poses a significant challenge to air superiority\, while ground-attack platforms like the Su-25 and MiG-27K threaten critical installations. Additionally\, reconnaissance aircraft such as the An-30M provide essential intelligence support\, making it imperative for NATO and Scandinavian forces to remain vigilant and prepared for a range of potential engagements. \n1.5 Ground threats\nSoviet SAM systems and anti-aircraft artillery in 1982 pose a formidable ground threat to NATO and Scandinavian air operations. The SA-2\, SA-3\, SA-5\, SA-6\, SA-10\, and SA-19 provide layered air defense capabilities\, while the ZSU-23-4 Shilka enhances ground protection against low-altitude incursions. Additionally\, Soviet Spetsnaz units\, equipped with man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) like the SA-7 (Strela-2)\, further complicate the threat environment by offering highly mobile and evasive options for ground forces. Together\, these systems create a complex and dangerous environment for any air operations in the region\, necessitating strategic planning and coordination among NATO and allied forces to mitigate the risks associated with these threats. \n1.6 Naval threats\nThe recently launched Slava-class frigate has been spotted in a bay\, likely positioned to provide air defense coverage for the area while keeping a low profile to evade NATO’s naval forces. The choice of location suggests a strategic effort to shield the ship from NATO’s reach while maintaining a defensive posture\, potentially complicating any allied aerial or naval operations in the vicinity. \n1.7 Friendly forces\nThe HAWK system provided medium-range surface-to-air missile capabilities\, allowing for flexible deployment and effective engagement of high-altitude targets. Its advanced guidance system made it a reliable asset for protecting critical infrastructure and airspace. \nNATO has deployed an AWACS aircraft patrolling along the Norwegian-Swedish border\, providing extended radar coverage for the operation. Additionally\, a tanker aircraft is stationed on the Norwegian side to support the newly arrived F-16s\, enabling extended operations in the area through aerial refueling. \n1.8 Civilian/3rd part\nNATO and Swedish ground forces in the target area and also all over Norway and Sweden \n2 MISSION\nIn a daring operation\, our primary objective is to rescue high-ranking NATO personnel stranded deep within enemy territory. The rapid Soviet advance has isolated them\, and the mission requires a coordinated effort to bring them to safety. It has only been a few hours since we were forced to retreat\, realizing that holding back the Soviet push into Finland was no longer possible. The withdrawal was so swift that key personnel were left behind\, and now we must get them out. \nTo succeed\, we must first cripple Soviet logistics by destroying key bridges that are crucial to their supply routes\, buying us precious time and slowing their advance. Simultaneously\, the threat posed by Soviet SAM sites must be neutralized. These defenses represent a significant danger to the rescue operation\, and dismantling them will clear a path for both air and ground maneuvers. \nWhile our aircraft work to establish air superiority\, close air support will be essential in suppressing Soviet forces around the extraction zone. This suppression will allow the rescue team to operate with minimal interference. Ensuring air dominance is vital to protect the extraction helicopters and ensure that the mission proceeds without the constant threat of Soviet fighters. \nMeanwhile\, a large-scale air strike will be launched to the south as a diversion\, aimed at drawing Soviet air defenses away from the actual rescue operation. This deception is designed to shift Soviet attention and resources\, leading them to believe that the primary attack is happening far from the extraction zone. Fast-moving fighter jets and strike aircraft will conduct simulated attack runs and employ electronic countermeasures to confuse Soviet radar\, hoping to thin their air coverage to the north. \nThis southern diversion will be intense\, combining high-speed dashes with precision bombing to keep Soviet forces occupied and create the illusion of a significant offensive. With this distraction in place\, we aim to give the rescue team a crucial window to operate with reduced threat from Soviet interceptors and surface-to-air missile systems. \nTime is against us\, but with precision strikes\, air dominance\, and relentless support\, we will bring our people home. This mission is not just about a rescue—it’s about restoring hope after a chaotic retreat. We owe it to those left behind to ensure their safe return\, and every effort will be made to see them back safely. \n3 EXECUTION\n3.1 Commander’s intent\n3.2 Packages\nThe mission contains 1 package. All flights are part of package \n3.3 Order of events\nThe success of this operation hinges on precise timing and coordination\, and it’s crucial that all actions unfold in the correct sequence. With the ongoing efforts to secure air superiority\, eliminate threats\, and carry out diversionary strikes\, everything must be executed with utmost efficiency. \nAs more information becomes available\, the operation will be adjusted accordingly\, but the key is to stick to the plan and ensure that each phase is executed in the right order to avoid complications or delays. The rescue of personnel\, along with the suppression of Soviet forces\, relies on the timing of every move—from the destruction of key infrastructure to the diversionary strikes and the final extraction. \nAny changes or additional intelligence will be integrated into the operation as quickly as possible\, but the overall success depends on maintaining tight coordination and following the established timeline.\nMission Timeline\nStart time is H (23:00 local time). Precise execution and timing are critical for mission success. \nH (23:00):\nELVIS5 and INDY9 immediately establish Combat Air Patrol (CAP) to secure the airspace and protect allied operations. \nH+75 (00:15):\nBANSHEE neutralizes the SA-6 site\, opening a safe corridor for allied forces.\nURBAN04 engages and destroys the Soviet Slava-class missile cruiser\, removing a key air defense threat.\nEILAM4 begins attacks on Soviet ground forces in the area as soon as the SA-6 is disabled\, supporting the rescue effort. \nH+80 (00:20):\nURBAN23 targets and destroys the designated bridge\, cutting off Soviet reinforcements.\nNITRO5 moves into the extraction zone to evacuate stranded NATO personnel. \nTiming and coordination are paramount to minimize risks and ensure the mission’s success. Every unit must act precisely according to the timeline. \n3.4 Rules of engagement\nROE: C\nAs per SPINS \n3.5 Acceptable level of risk\nALR: MEDIUM\nAs per SPINS \n3.6 Flight tasking\nTasking can change depending on how many that sign up for the module\nF-14A – CAP\nThe F-14A’s task is to establish and maintain air superiority\, eliminating enemy aircraft threats to ensure the safety of allied forces and ground operations. \nAJS-37 – Precision Strike\nyour mission is twofold and critical to the success of the operation: \nDestroy the Bridge H+80 Lat Long Standard: N 70°11’53” E 28°11’58”: Target and eliminate the key bridge to disrupt Soviet reinforcements attempting to reach the area. SUMMARY:Training Tuesday
DESCRIPTION:Everyone’s welcome to this training!\nTraining Mission: – \nPlanned Training: \n1. F/A-18C\, F-14B\n– Case 1 SHB and charlie-timing \nTime to get your Charlie-time on!\nWhen you’re calling Mother to arrive at the boat\, you will (unless per-briefed) be assigned a Charlie-time. That is the time the first aircraft in your group should be in the groove towards the deck of the carrier. In this training session we will explore what rule of thumbs we can use to get a good accuracy on Charlie. We will break it down into:\n– Time to do one holding lap around the boat in the stack\n– Time from commencing to first trap\n– Time from commencing to first trap using SHB \nA general rule is that the commencing should happen about 8 minutes from touch down\, given that you fly the standard pattern and do a half standard rate turn on turning for initial. That means that your flight should be positioned at the 9 o’clock position in the stack (with the boat being at 3 o’clock) at that time. But what is your personal time? Let’s find out!\nThe training will happen in single ships\, each flight will join the stack and then start their timer once in the stack to time a lap of the circle. The circle in the stack is flown with a half standard rate turn. Once commencing\, the next timer should be started. The first trap should be performed with hook UP\, and time of touch down should be recorded.\nThe flight then egresses and joins the stack again for at least 1 circle in the stack\, commencing and an optional SHB or regular trap\, depending on personal preferences. The second pass should be timed just like the first\, but with hook down to trap and recover as per normal procedures. \nLSO will be available to assist with the timing.\nStudy Case 1 in the Wiki HERE. Pay special attention to the angles\, rates\, distances & speeds. \n2. F-16C\n– TBU \n3. AJS 37\n– TBU \n4. A-10C II\n– TBU \n5. AH-64D\n– Buddy-lase Hellfire practice \n6. SUMMARY:A DCS Christmas Tale
DESCRIPTION:A DCS Christmas Tale \nTwas the night before Christmas\, and all through the sky\,\nSanta’s factory was buzzing; the gifts piled high.\nBut oh\, what disaster\, what terrible fright\nThe Orcs were advancing to ruin the night! \nThe elf’s worked hard\, their hands swift and neat\,\nBut how could they load when the Orcs beat their feet?\nSo Santa called in the best of the best\,\nThe DCS pilots to handle the rest. \nTo your cockpits\, my heroes!” the jolly man roared\,\nProtect my sleigh factory\, and guard my gift hoard!\nEscort the convoy through mountains and snow\,\nTo the airfield where the C-130 must go!” \nThe F-16s roared with their engines so bright\,\nLighting the skies in a dazzling flight.\nApaches hovered with rockets to spare\,\nTheir rotor blades slicing the cold winter air. \nThe A-10s rolled in\, with their BRRRRT full of cheer\,\nThese Orcs won’t ruin this most festive year!\nEven Viggens and Mirages joined in the fray\,\nChristmas is ours\, and we’re saving the day! \nThe convoy rolled out\, with gifts piled high\,\nThe Orcs tried their worst\, but we heard their last cry.\nFor strafing and bombing and missiles galore\,\nEnsured that those baddies would bother no more. \nAt last\, on the runway\, the Hercules stood\,\nIts engines a-rumbling\, as only they could.\nThe gifts were all loaded\, the mission complete\,\nAnd Santa’s big sleigh took off with a leap. \nSo here’s to the pilots who answered the call\,\nWho saved Christmas cheer for children and all.\nThe skies now are quiet\, the stars shining bright\nMerry Christmas to all\, and to all a safe flight! \nRSVP: 24 12 19 – 19:30 (please sign-up asap though\, as it makes things easier to plan)\nActivity: Mission – CAP\, Air Interdiction\nTheatre: Kola\nModules: Almost everything from 1970 and forwards. Their forces include anti-air threats\, heavy ground units\, and hidden artillery positions. This advance poses a significant threat to the convoy’s safety and must be neutralized before they can engage. \n1.2 Area of operations\nSanta’s workshop is nestled in a remote area near Rovaniemi\, surrounded by dense forests of pine and spruce. The terrain is rugged\, with small\, frozen lakes and rivers cutting through the forest. The area is covered in a thick layer of snow during winter\, making navigation difficult but offering good cover for the convoy. \n1.3 Time and weather\n* Dec 23 – 2024\n* 13:00 local time\n* VIS 3-5 km RA OVC 9/15 28/30 FEW 40 wind 328/06 \n1.4 Air threats\nN/A \n1.5 Ground threats\nEnemy Forces Around the Workshop and Airfield:\nPrimarily infantry units equipped for close-quarters combat.\nLightly armored troop transports providing mobility and moderate firepower.\nExpect a mix of RPG-equipped squads and small arms fire concentrated around defensive chokepoints. \nReinforcements from the East:\nArmored Threats:\nT-90 main battle tanks to the battlefield. These beasts are the crown jewel of modern armored warfare – heavily armored\, highly mobile\, and packing enough firepower to level Santa’s entire workshop.\nArmored troop carriers (ATC) capable of delivering squads deep into contested zones.\nAnti-Air Assets:\nIt seems Krampus stumbled upon a surplus of old Toyota pickups. Like an evil car dealer on a mission\, he’s slapped ZU-23 autocannons onto every single one of them. We’re talking about an entire fleet of rolling nightmares\, ready to ruin your day. \nExpect an overdose of rusty\, modified “technicals” blasting lead into both the skies and the ground. They might look like something out of a junkyard rally\, but don’t underestimate them – they’re fast\, deadly\, and about as frustrating as a reindeer refusing to pull the sleigh.\nArtillery Threat:\nReports indicate incoming artillery units\, likely self-propelled or towed\, advancing with the eastern reinforcements.\nThese units are expected to target Santa’s workshop as soon as they enter effective range. Destruction of these artillery positions is critical to prevent damage to the workshop and disruption of operations. \n1.6 Friendly forces\nE.L.F.S \n1.7 Civilian/3rd part\n2 MISSION\nYour mission is to protect Santa’s workshop and ensure the safe delivery of presents to a waiting C-130 for takeoff. A convoy carrying the presents will be escorted through hostile terrain to the C-130\, but the enemy will stop at nothing to sabotage the operation. Intelligence has revealed that the enemy is using a train loaded with explosives\, which must be located and destroyed before it can threaten the convoy or Santa’s workshop. \nYour forces must defend\, attack\, and neutralize any threats to ensure Christmas is saved. Coordination and precision are vital to achieving success in this high-stakes operation. \n3 EXECUTION\n3.1 Commander’s intent\n3.2 Packages\nThe mission contains 3 package\, callsign CANDY CANE\, JINGLE BELL and NORTH STAR \n3.3 Order of events\n3.4 Rules of engagement\nROE: C\nAs per SPINS \n3.5 Acceptable level of risk\nALR: HIGH\nAs per SPINS \n3.6 Flight tasking\nPackage CANDY CANE (Lead: BLACKJACK31 )\nRole: Protect the convoy transporting the presents from Santa’s workshop to the C-130. \nAssets:\nBLACKJACK3\, HAWG8\, RAGE9\, NITRO5\, CRIMSON3 \nObjective:\nThe convoy will travel along narrow\, snowy forest roads to the designated LZ for the C-130. Your role is to clear the route of any hostile forces. Use your aircraft to patrol and provide a close escort to ensure the convoy is not ambushed. Be prepared to engage any enemy ground targets that attempt to disrupt the convoy’s path. Should the convoy be delayed or attacked\, quickly neutralize the threats and provide reestablished cover. The convoy needs to be protected all the way to the C-130 for a safe and quick loading. \nPackage JINGLE BELL (Lead: RUDOLPH11)\nRole: Conduct a counter-offensive against enemy forces threatening the convoy and Santa’s workshop. \nAssets:\nRUDOLPH1\, ARCTIC1\, INDY9\, HITMAN3\, TEXAS6 \nObjective:\nLaunch a counter-offensive to disrupt and destroy the reinforcements. Key objectives include: \n* Preemptively striking enemy staging areas.\n* Identifying and eliminating anti-aircraft defenses to clear the airspace.\n* Neutralizing heavy ground units and artillery to prevent them from targeting the convoy. \nThe ultimate goal is to destroy the enemy advance\, ensuring no surprises for the convoy. Coordinate closely with Package CANDY CANE to time strikes effectively and provide air cover as the convoy progresses. Precision and timing will be critical—delay could put the convoy at risk. \nPackage NORTH STAR (Lead: FROSTY21)\nRole: ensures the railway is secured and operational by coordinating the destruction of enemy threats. \nAssets:\nFROSTY2\, FENRIS6\, GRIM7\, BENDER2 \nObjective:\nThe mission objective has shifted to securing the critical railway line that supplies Santa’s workshop with essential materials. Without this lifeline\, production at the workshop will grind to a halt\, jeopardizing Christmas altogether. \nEnemy forces have set up ambushes along multiple points of the railway\, aiming to disable any trains attempting to bring in supplies. Your task is to neutralize these threats and ensure the railway remains operational. \nFROSTY21 will lead reconnaissance efforts\, identifying enemy positions and relaying target data to strike packages\, including FA-18s and Viggens. Precision and speed are essential—every moment the railway is out of service puts Christmas at greater risk. \nLet’s secure the tracks and keep the workshop running! \n4 ADMINISTRATION AND LOGISTICS\n4.1 Airfield operations\n* KALLAX\n* TOWER: Ch7\n* TCN: 98X (115.1 SLU is replaced by TCN)\n* Active runway: 32\n* Departure via BESLA\n* Approach via BESLA \n* ROVANIEMI\n* TOWER: Ch6\n* TCN: 117X\n* Active runway: 21\n* Departure climb straight ahead to at or above 1030.\n* Approach: Contact Tower. \n4.3 Tankers\nARCO1 101Y 18000′ Ch14\nTEXACO2 102Y 16000′ Ch20\nAs per Aerial Refueling SOP \n5 COMMAND AND CONTROL\n5.1 Commander\n* Mission commander CH3\n* Mission commander deputy is\n* Package CANDY CANE lead is BLACKJACK31\n* Package JINGLE BELL lead is RUDOLPH11\n* Package NORTH STAR lead is FROSTY21 \n5.2 Frequencies\nAs per Comms SOP \n5.3 Authentication\nRAMROD: GIFTWRAPS\nAs per Authentication SOP \n5.4 Freq flow (Airfield flights)\n7/6\, 9\, 3/5\, 7/6\nClearance to start up and call Tower(ch 7) when ready to taxi. The US Army secured Damascus two days ago and has subsequently sent scouting forces in the Palmyra direction\, encountering surprisingly little resistance. The SyAF has also been quiet\, as the road bases W and SW of Palmyra have been repeatedly targeted by air and TLAM strikes. The loss of their last SA-11 was also discouraging.  Some activity remains in the far east\, around Deir es Zor\, where occasional MiG-21 and MiG-29 sorties have been flown in the past 24 hrs. \nDuring the night\, ELINT indicated increasing SAA activity near Palmyra. This coincided with worsening weather\, making our intelligence gathering difficult\, but in the early hours of the morning their intentions became clear: A large-scale counterattack\, spearheaded by Republican Guard units with rotary wing assets in support. If successful\, the Syrian counterattack may very well repel our forces from the Damascus area. \n1.2 Area of operations\nSouthern and Eastern Syria \n1.3 Time and weather\n* May 16\, 2010\n* 09:00 local time\n* BKN/12\, FEW 36/38\, SHRA\n* Wind From 258 / 6\n* FORCE QNH 2992 / 1013 \n1.4 Air threats\nMiG-21\, MiG-29\, Mi-8\, Mi-24 \nOne active road base for fixed wing aircraft remains near Deir ez-Zor \n1.5 Ground threats\nT-90\, T-72\, BMP1\, BMP-3\, SA-8\, SA-13\, SA-15\, MANPADS\, ZSU-23 \nThe SAA Republican Guard spearhead consists of T-90 and BMP-3 vehicles. SUMMARY:Northern Sentinel: Escalation at the Edge #2
DESCRIPTION:RSVP: 24 11 14 – 19:30 (please sign-up asap though\, as it makes things easier to plan)\nActivity: Mission – CAP\, Air Interdiction\, Recon\, Strike\nTheatre: Kola\nModules in priority order: AWACS\, STRIL (maybe only for viggen at this mission)\, AJS-37\, F-5\, F-16A (F-16C with limitations read below)\, F-14A\, MIG-21\, F4 and F1\nPrerequisites: CASE 1 for F14\n \nIn 1982\, rising Cold War tensions reach a critical point on the Kola Peninsula\, a strategic region where Soviet forces hold their northern stronghold. NATO intelligence reports an alarming increase in Soviet military activity near Norway and Finland\, including the deployment of advanced MiG-29 fighters and enhanced air defense systems. NATO responds with a coalition of air assets from Norway\, Sweden\, Finland\, the United States\, the United Kingdom\, Germany\, Spain and France\, aiming to deter Soviet aggression and protect vital northern territories. \nThe mission series\, Northern Sentinel\, follows a multinational air force tasked with defending NATO’s northern flank\, carrying out reconnaissance\, intercepting Soviet intruders\, and engaging in strategic strikes against key targets. Each mission pushes pilots and their aircraft—F-5s\, Viggens\, MiG-21s\, F-14s\, F-4s\, Mirage F1s\, and Mirage 2000s—to their limits in an unforgiving arctic landscape. With heightened risks of Soviet air incursions and escalating tensions\, these missions are critical in maintaining the fragile peace and stability of Northern Europe. \n\n LINEUP\n F-14A CAP\nMUSTANG41 (104): NilleFix / Wex\nMUSTANG42 (105): Blichten / Deadgun \nF-14A CAP\nELVIS51 (100): Deadlift / Hoftari\nELVIS52 (101): The Hoff / Troll \nAJS 37 \nURBAN23: Frefeh\nURBAN79: CoNa \nURBAN04: GlueStick\nURBAN10: Jasnisse \nURBAN05: Goofy79\nURBAN44: Qvintus \nURBAN77:\nURBAN36: \nF-5 INTERCEPT\nEILAM41: Bankler\nEILAM42: Justin \nEILAM43:\nEILAM44: \nF-16A CAP\nINDY91: Moldy\nINDY92: Mags \nF-16A CAP\nJESTER11:\nJESTER12: \nUH-1H Transport\nNITRO51:\nNITRO52:\nNITRO53:\nNITRO54: \nM-F1 \nAPEX11:\nAPEX12: \nF-4\nBANSHEE21: Fille\nBANSHEE22: Tony\nBANSHEE23: Jedi \nSENTRY51:\nSENTRY52: \nAWACS\nSTINGRAY: Ulvar\nSTINGRAY: \nMINKEN: Apollo\nMINKEN: Urist\nMINKEN: Minken \nAirport\nGround:\nTower: Baconbomb\nControl: \nCarrier\nMarshal:\nTower:\nLSO:\n \n1 SITUATION\n1.1 Overview\nFollowing the tense standoff of the initial engagement\, the situation has rapidly worsened. Intelligence indicates that a Soviet invasion of Finland is imminent. In response\, both Finland and Sweden have initiated emergency relocation of their air assets to temporary road bases to avoid the risk of attacks on major airbases. Norway and Germany\, although retaining their operations from fixed airbases\, are also preparing for imminent conflict. French and German forces have joined the effort\, but will hold fire until Soviet forces cross the Finnish border. NATO forces\, still hesitant to fully intervene\, closely monitor the situation as war seems inevitable. \nDespite ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the crisis\, the window for peace is closing rapidly. Soviet incursions into Finnish or Norwegian airspace will now be treated as acts of war and met with a military response. Soviet forces\, which include MiG-21s alongside their more advanced jets\, continue to intensify their presence along the border. \nSituation Overview:\nSoviet forces are preparing for a large-scale invasion of Finland\, leading both Finland and Sweden to relocate much of their operational aircraft to temporary road bases (vägbaser) to reduce vulnerability. Norway continues to operate from its established bases\, readying both F-5s and F-16As for air defense. German F-4 Phantoms and French Mirage F1s are stationed nearby but will only engage once Soviet forces cross the Finnish border. Soviet MiG-21s\, MiG-23s\, MiG-29s\, and advanced SAM systems present a formidable challenge for any NATO or Scandinavian aircraft in the area. \n1.2 Area of operations\nKola Penisula \n1.3 Time and weather\n* July 14 – 1982\n* 05:00 local time\n* Scattered (7500′-11500′)\n* Wind 325 / 5\n* FORCE QNH 29.13 \n1.4 Air threats\nThe presence of MiG-21s\, MiG-23s\, and MiG-29s poses a significant challenge to air superiority\, while ground-attack platforms like the Su-25 and MiG-27K threaten critical installations. Additionally\, reconnaissance aircraft such as the An-30M provide essential intelligence support\, making it imperative for NATO and Scandinavian forces to remain vigilant and prepared for a range of potential engagements. \n1.5 Ground threats\nSoviet SAM systems and anti-aircraft artillery in 1982 poses a formidable ground threat to NATO and Scandinavian air operations. The SA-2\, SA-3\, SA-5\, SA-10\, and SA-19 provide layered air defense capabilities\, while the ZSU-23-4 Shilka enhances ground protection against low-altitude incursions. Together\, these systems create a complex and dangerous environment for any air operations in the region\, necessitating strategic planning and coordination among NATO and allied forces to mitigate the risks associated with these threats. \n1.6 Friendly forces\nThe HAWK system provided medium-range surface-to-air missile capabilities\, allowing for flexible deployment and effective engagement of high-altitude targets. Its advanced guidance system made it a reliable asset for protecting critical infrastructure and airspace. \nFinland utilized the SA-2\, an older but still effective surface-to-air missile system. Despite its age\, the SA-2 was capable of engaging high-flying aircraft\, offering a significant deterrent against potential incursions. Together\, these systems enhanced the overall air defense posture of the Nordic countries\, creating a layered defense against hostile aerial threats. \n1.7 Civilian/3rd part\nCivilian air traffic is still active in some parts of eastern peninsula. \n2 MISSION\nRespond decisively to all Soviet intrusions along the Scandinavian border with overwhelming force to safeguard our territorial integrity and uphold regional security. Any unauthorized incursion into Scandinavian airspace will be met with immediate and resolute action\, demonstrating our commitment to defend against aggression. Coordination between our air and ground units is essential\, ensuring rapid response capabilities. Our objective is to maintain a robust defensive posture\, deter further hostilities\, and protect the sovereignty of Scandinavia against any potential threats. \n3 EXECUTION\n3.1 Commander’s intent\nConduct reconnaissance for ground forces along the border and intercept any Soviet aircraft attempting to cross into Scandinavian airspace. Ensure that all incursions are met with decisive action to maintain territorial integrity and air superiority. \n3.3 Order of events\n3.4 Rules of engagement\nROE: B\nAs per SPINS\nAddition: Weapons free on Soviet forces breaching the border into Finland or Norway. Engage any incursions with appropriate force to defend our national sovereignty and regional stability.\nRoE_B_Scandinavian_Forces_19820710\n\nMUSTANG4 & ELVIS5: All unidentified aircraft within a 100 nautical mile radius of the carrier are classified as potential threats. Engaging protocols dictate that such contacts must be intercepted and\, if they fail to disengage\, neutralized to ensure the security of the carrier.\n\nBANSHEE2:Soviet or Warsaw Pact aircraft approaching within 20 nautical miles of either NATO asset may be considered hostile if displaying aggressive maneuvers or locking onto NATO assets with radar. Engage only in self-defense or in direct defense of Magic1-1 and Texaco02.\nDo not pursue or engage beyond NATO-defined operational boundaries unless the safety of Magic1-1 or Texaco02 is in imminent danger. \n3.5 Acceptable level of risk\nALR: HIGH\nAs per SPINS \n3.6 Flight tasking\nUrban Squadron (Viggens): Tasked with defending Scandinavian territory\, these Viggens stand ready to intercept potential threats near the Soviet-Finnish border\, prepared to confront advanced Soviet SAM systems and the formidable MiG-29.\nDeparting: Jokkmokk Parked: Main Apron \nNorwegian Forces: Norway maintains CAP missions with F-5s\, while the newly acquired F-16As are tasked with air superiority. These fighters will provide crucial support to defend against Soviet incursions.\nDeparting: Banak Parked: MIL Apron \nGerman F-4s: German Phantoms provide essential firepower and air-defense capabilities for the mission.
